Trump’s Attack on Global Institutions

By Aly Kamadia, Editor-In-Chief, iDose Magazine

Dear Readers,

Is it not staggering to learn that “US and European aid cuts could together cause up to 22.6 million additional deaths – including 5.4 million children under the age of five – in developing countries by 2030?” (Barcelona Institute for Global Health)

It would be largely mistaken to attribute all the fault to US President Trump – the seeds for such challenges were planted well before Trump’s first presidency (e.g., neoliberal globalization).

But his current assault on noble global institutions cannot be underestimated.

Trump hasn’t merely stated that “I don’t need international law” – his actions are very much in line with his proclamation.

And so the Intellectual Dose we feature this week goes over some of the depressing realities of this attack. Authored by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, it provides a sobering overview of what Trump’s retreat on international human rights looks like.

That said, I would ask iDose readers a simple question: If you’re in a position to help combat Trump’s assault, are you doing what you can?

Or more specifically, if neoliberal globalization has made your wealth explode in the past few decades, are you deploying any resources (e.g., money to trusted humanitarian organizations) to combat this crisis?

After all, the stakes—22.6 million lives—demand more than outrage. They demand strategic action.
