Even if I was hallucinating, this was still hilarious.
My TV was showing New York City Mayor-Elect Mamdani and President Trump being a bit too friendly with each other. During a press conference at the White House, my ‘vision’ even revealed moments in which Trump was outright flirting with Mamdani.
“I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great”, Trump stated while lavishing praise on the Muslim Mayor-Elect, with the sort of romantic gaze that the President only reserves for very rich Billionaires.
Despite the absence of a kiss between the two to conclude the meeting, some of Mamdani’s supporters were nevertheless highly critical of his decision to meet Trump – a man who Mamdani accused of being a “fascist” (and still does).
But yours truly was hardly as critical.
After all, the American political establishment is set on absolutely crushing the Muslim Democratic Socialist. And if Mamdani wants to do more than merely survive and actually thrive, he cannot afford to merely rely on luck.
The politics of the moment must be accurately diagnosed as he moves forward.
Meeting with Trump may or may not have helped with assessing the moment, and even perhaps opened up a direct channel of communication (even if temporary). But I don’t see how it could cause harm.
And attempting to accurately diagnose the politics is precisely what Slavoj Žižek offers in iDose Magazine’s featured piece for this month.
Even if one has disagreements with Žižek, the philosopher’s assessment is certainly worth consulting.
Along with Žižek’s analysis, November features relatively optimistic commentary about Gaza; a provocative piece arguing that meditation can be harmful for some people; and an article with the latest research on how to prevent Alzheimer’s.
And finally, for those who enjoy our long reads, we feature an excerpt from James Lovelock’s 2019 book “Novacene.”
Lovelock was the scientist behind the Gaia theory, who died in 2022 on his 103rd birthday.
And since the future of our planet continues to be threatened, his perspective is welcomed.
