For our American readers, and those of you with friends in the US, I have two words: Vote Democrat.
I say this mindful that the Republicans are all but certain to lose the House and, according to polling and prediction markets at the time of writing (Monday evening), they are headed for a likely (i.e., not certain), loss of the Senate.
That said, when I say “Vote Democrat,” I am under no illusions.
The cost-of-living crisis began before Trump’s second term and extends well beyond American borders.
Inflation is not something a Democratic-controlled Congress can fix on its own. Many of today’s politicians have literally no understanding of how inflation might be fought, and they are less than transparent about lacking the tools to do so.
Mainstream Democrats have not declared war on an oligarchy that holds excessive power over American policy (e.g., Big Tech CEOs).
And Trump’s ability to wage war on Iran will not disappear in the very near future.
Nevertheless, the oversight a Democratic-controlled Congress could provide over a president who often openly celebrates violating the rule of law is vital.
So while the significance of a Democratic Congress shouldn’t be exaggerated, it shouldn’t be downplayed either.
Hence two familiar words: Vote Democrat.
